Capalaba Produce (3221 Old Cleveland Road) is a little taste of the country in the city that a colleague who is also an organic gardener recommended. It’s a hodge-podge of buildings and a and farm pens with goats, pigs, chickens, ducks and many more barnyard animals. There is a New Zealand shop on the site selling L&P, Watties Sauce and Rashuns. They also sell bales of hay, I bought a bale of lucern to improve my soil and to use as a mulch.
There is a nursery selling orchids, bromeliads, veggie seedlings and a big selection of native plants. The main building has farm supplies, chicken coops and chicks, pet supplies, tropical fish and plenty of gardening supplies, such as hardwood tomato stakes which we picked up a load of this morning.
On out first trip we met their parrot, who has an impressive vocabulary of statements such as “Gidday Mate”, “Gimme a Kiss” and “Get out you stupid idiot”, he can also sing how much is that doggy in the window!
On our trip this morning we saw a family giving a large white goat a bit of attention, he was loved having his lower back scratched while wagging his little tail. He loved it so much he let out a big loud fart directed right at them in appreciation.
